Project Management

Useful to know!

Where can I work in project management?

You can work in Berlin and the ten regional centres in the eastern German states plus Hamburg.

What tasks can I take on?

At 50Hertz, there are always a wide variety of projects that are working on their goals simultaneously in large numbers. Most of them are in the service of the energy transition, regardless of whether they involve new construction, expansion or conversion, onshore or offshore. We have introduced a matrix organisation in order to use the available resources as efficiently as possible. As a project manager, you will be supported by the 50Hertz Competence Centres when it comes to securing expertise for your project teams.

The range of project topics is also impressive. In terms of project volume, the large HVDC lines projects attract a great deal of public attention. The SuedOstLink was our first project of this kind, and now further HVDC projects have been added. Our activities in the expansion of the offshore grid in the Baltic and North Sea are no less demanding in terms of technology and investment volume. At the same time, we are working on many construction projects relating to overhead lines/cable connections and substations. But that is by no means all. There are also other exciting projects at 50Hertz, for example in the context of digitalization or corporate development.

It is not always a question of large-scale or overall project management. There is also the option of initially taking on responsibility as a project manager for a sub-project.

What skills should I bring with me?

Sometimes specialist knowledge, for example in electrical engineering or civil engineering, plays a major role, but often enough project management experience is more important (ideally in a corresponding environment). In the end, the well-known project management virtues (ensuring time, costs and performance) may count more than a specific degree program or course of study. Of course, we will be happy if you have gained experience with project management tools (e.g. MS Project / SAP) and have a project management certificate, but this is not always a must.

As one of the four transmission grid operators in Germany, 50Hertz is responsible for high-voltage power transmission; control at this level is decisive for the stability of the grid and to ensure a secure electricity supply in Germany and Europe. We are part of a European grid association, working closely with colleagues throughout Europe. 50Hertz is part of a European company, working alongside Belgian grid operator Elia in the Elia Group. We work together closely in many key areas. Individual activities such as IT or purchasing are organised at the group level, which means that in these areas colleagues from Elia and 50Hertz work in a team from both Berlin and Brussels.
